A kindergarten teacher received a surprise celebration from the staff and students at Red Bank Elementary School in Clovis.

The school was holding its yearbook dedication on Friday and used the gathering as an opportunity to thank the district’s longest-employed teacher, Sharon Lamb.

Mrs. Lamb is a kindergarten teacher at Red Bank, celebrating 50 years, and has no plans to retire.

She was hired by founding Superintendent Floyd “Doc” Buchanan in 1973 as a third-grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary, and 10 years later she switched to teaching kindergarten.

She moved to open the new Red Bank Elementary in 1991, where she continues to teach kindergarten to this day.

“I was hired back in the day when teachers were required to wear stockings, high heels, dresses or a suit,” said Lamb at an employee appreciation event in May of her tenure. “My goodness things have changed since then!”

Lamb said her favorite part of her job is the children.

They say such funny things in kindergarten.

Principal Amanda Torres said Lamb’s care and dedication go beyond the classroom.

“She is known as the Cake Walk Queen,” Torres said of Lamb’s years of running of the carnival cake walk.

She is also known for her knitting and community outreach projects working with the senior center and celebrating the holidays throughout the year by delivering handmade gits to the residence made by her kindergarten class.

Asked about plans to stay in the classroom, she said absolutely. “There are always new accomplishments and goals to meet. That is part of the fun!
