An intoxicated driver who hit a pedestrian and did not stop over the weekend is facing more serious charges after the 75-year-old man died in the hospital, authorities said.
Alan Friedman, of Closter, was seriously injured in a hit-and-run on Durie Avenue in Closter around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office said. He was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center, but died from his injuries Monday, authorities said.
Jesus Yunganaula Tenempaguay, 36, of Hackensack, was originally faced three third-degree charges of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in serious bodily injury, endangering an injured victim and hindering apprehension, according to prosecutors. His charges were upgraded to second-degree vehicular homicide, second-degree leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death. The hindering apprehension charged remained unchanged.
He was also issued motor vehicles summonses for driving while intoxicated.
Investigators said a SUV being driven Tenempaguay struck Friedman as he was walking along the street and did not stop, officials said.
Tenempaguay was in the Bergen County jail when he was served with the upgraded charges and will remain there pending a detention hearing that is scheduled for Friday, prosecutors said.
