A man has been charged after allegedly fleeing the scene of a crash that seriously injured a 75-year-old pedestrian, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
Jesus Yunganaula Tenempaguay, 36, of Hackensack, was arrested after investigators alleged he was the operator of the vehicle and that he was intoxicated at the time of the crash, officials said.
Police responded to a reported hit-and-run crash on Durie Avenue in Closter on Sunday about 3:30 p.m., officials said. Officers located the pedestrian, who was brought to Hackensack University Medical Center to be treated for injuries that are considered life-threatening, authorities said.
Investigators said a Honda CRV struck the victim as he was walking, before identifying Tenempaguay as the suspect, officials said.
He has been charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in serious bodily injury, endangering an injured victim and hindering apprehension and issued multiple motor vehicle summonses including driving while intoxicated, prosecutors said.
Tenempaguay is being held in Bergen County Jail pending his first court appearance.
