Frank Femia, a devout if very unconventional Catholic, who died in 2006, inspired the founding of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, adopting the name Assunta and using the female pronoun for herself.
She served a prison term for her anti-Vietnam War activities. In her obituary, she commented on her experiences in a parochial school and in prison, saying, “Prison was a lot less brutal than high school. I never got beat up in prison.”
I guess the church is still beating up on Assunta.
