CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Rossview High shortstop Scotty Dean has earned Clarksville Now Player of the Week honors for the second week of the 2022-23 regular season.

Dean is currently one of the hottest batters in Montgomery County after the Hawks played five games this past week. Rossview compiled a 3-2 record over those five games, and the senior shortstop is a big reason why.

Week overview

The beginning of the week couldn’t have started better for Dean and the Rossview Hawks. On Monday, March 20, the team began a two-game series against Springfield High. During the first game of the series, the Hawks won 16-1 due to their offensive firepower and effective starting pitching.

Rossview senior pitcher Cannon Rice threw a no-hitter during the outing with a stat line of 5 innings pitched, 1 unearned run, 2 walks and 12 strikeouts. Throughout his start, Rice was given an overwhelming amount of run support. This included his team hitting 6 extra base hits, and 2 came from Dean.

Dean finished game one going 2 for 2 with a triple, a homerun, 2 runs scored and four runs batted in. He would go onto carry his momentum into the next game against Springfield High and, once again, Rossview blew their opponent out of the water.

The Hawks won 20-5, and Dean finished 1 for 3 with a three-run homerun, 2 runs scored, 3 runs batted in and 1 walk.

Rossview pushed their winning streak to 3 games after defeating Ravenwood 5-4. However, the Clarksville-area team went on to lose their final two games against Summit High and Independence High.

Throughout those final three games, Dean continued to cause havoc against opposing pitchers. When it was all said and done, he finished the week 5 for 16 with 2 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 5 runs scored and 9 runs batted in. In addition, he recorded 3 walks, 1 hit by pitch, 1 sacrifice fly and 2 stolen bases.

2022-23 season

When looking at Dean’s production over the past two weeks, the shortstop has remained effective and efficient at the plate to start the season.

Dean ended last week with a batting average of .364 and an on-base percentage of .463, which means he’s getting on base often for the Hawks.

He has shown that he’ll find a way on the base paths by any means necessary. Dean has 12 hits on the year, but he has also worked 7 walks against opposing pitchers.

Dean’s power is another attribute that has separated himself from other batters this season. Out of his 12 hits this season, 7 have been for extra base hits, which includes 3 doubles, 2 triples and 2 home runs. He’s knocked in 13 RBI’s as well.

With all of this being said, Dean has a slugging percentage of .758 and an OPS of 1.221.

Coaches corner

“Obviously, Scotty’s a great talent and a joy to coach,” said Rossview Head Coach Parker Holman. “But I’m proud of him for his leadership role he’s had to take on this year. We’ve had some guys with injuries, so we’ve asked more of him recently and he’s handled it well.”

“There’s a lot of good players in our county, there really is. There’s a lot of guys on our roster that do great things for us, but Scotty’s skillset is on par with anyone in the county or our team.

“He really gets the benefit of the RBI production from the players that hit before him. As the opportunity arises, he does a good job of getting those guys in and giving them a chance to score runs off of his bat.”

Rossview High sits at 9-3 after playing two games this week.
