Abington Heights was one of the hottest teams in District 2 baseball as Lackawanna League and Wyoming Valley Conference teams prepared to try to begin as much league play as weather conditions would allow in the first week of April.
Through April 1, Abington Heights was 3-0 overall, matching Honesdale, and just behind Dunmore and Valley View (both 4-0) for the best overall records in District 2.
The Comets not only led the eight-team race for the top seed in the District 2-4 Class 5A Subregional playoffs, but also had the best playoff power rating of the 39 District 2 teams across all six classifications.
Abington Heights scored 40 runs and allowed just six while winning its three March non-league games.
Abington Heights 11, Pittston Area 5
Jake Lenahan went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a triple to lead the way March 29 when Abington Heights went on the road to win in a matchup of veteran teams coming off second-place finishes in the top divisions of their respective leagues.
The Comets took control with eight runs in the top of the second for a 9-0 lead.
Mark Nazar singled in a run in the first.
The second inning was highlighted by two-run singles from Lenahan and Lincoln Anderson.
Nazar also drove in two runs. Anderson had a second hit.
Tate Pentasuglio and pinch hitter Reece Weinberg had doubles. Harshal Patel scored twice.
The Comets used a combination of four pitchers. J.P. Kehoe got the last five outs without allowing a run.
Abington Heights 17, Mid Valley 0
Abington Heights closed out the five-inning road win March 25 by scoring nine runs in the top of the fifth.
Lenahan pitched the first four innings, throwing 36 of 54 pitches for strikes and allowing just two hits while walking one and striking out three. Kehoe walked one and struck out one in the scoreless fifth inning to clinch the win on the 10-run rule.
Nick Bradley homered, doubled, drove in four runs and scored two.
Nazar was 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs.
Reese Zalewski did not have an official at-bat, but scored twice and drove in two runs with the help of a sacrifice fly and three walks.
Tate Pentasuglio added a double and Anderson scored twice.
Abington Heights 12, Bethlehem Freedom 1
Leadoff hitter Tate Pentasuglio went 3-for-3 and scored four times March 16 when Abington Heights opened the season with a road win.
Lenahan and Nick Bradley combined on a two-hitter and did not allow an earned run.
The Comets ended the game on the 10-run rule when they scored three runs in the top of the sixth, then shut out Freedom for the fourth straight inning.
Tate Pentasuglio stole two bases, had a double, drew a walk and drove in a run.
Abington Heights scored twice in the top of the first and added six runs in the third for an 8-1 lead.
Kehoe singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored. Lenahan also had a double, two RBI and a run scored.
Hunter Pentasuglio had two hits.
Lenahan pitched five innings, giving up an unearned run on one hit while striking out six and walking one. Bradley gave up a hit while striking out one in a scoreless sixth inning.
