Clark County has approved plans for a new guitar-shaped hotel tower that will eventually replace the volcano at The Mirage on the Las Vegas Strip.
Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of Hard Rock International's design and plans for the 660-foot-tall tower during a zoning meeting Wednesday.
Hard Rock executives revealed their plans to replace the volcano after reaching a $1 billion deal to buy The Mirage's operations from MGM Resorts.
The company's application states the new hotel tower and buildings will total almost 1.44 million square feet of new space, which includes a casino floor, stores and restaurants. The hotel itself will boast 600 hotel rooms over 37 floors.
A representative for Hard Rock told commissioners Wednesday that the existing hotel tower will remain in operation during construction.
