CLAREMORE, Okla. – Another year is in the books for the American Quarter Horse Association as the 2023 racing season has concluded at Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs. A total of 279 total races ran in 27 days . Of them, 54 were with mixed (Paint and Appaloosa) horses and 225 with Quarter Horses. The season concluded on November 19, with an improvement in average field size from 7.99 in 2022 to 8.22 in 2023 . The meet saw more than $5.2 million in wagers.

• The Class 6AI semifinals will feature games between No. 3 Owasso vs. No. 1 Bixby and No. 4 Jenks vs. No. 2 Union. The games will take place at Memorial Stadium, Sand Springs on Friday.

For the fourth time in the last 21 months, Bixby and Owasso faced off in what started as a close game. However, Bixby Spartans ran away with the win, scoring them their tenth straight spot in the state finals. Spartans win, 56-14.

NOBLE, Okla. – Pokes Report was on the scene on Friday afternoon in Noble at the Class 5A State Semifinal between top-ranked Del City and Claremore. Oklahoma State running back commitment Rodney Fields was doing a little of everything for the Eagles in the 34-13 win over the Zebras that clinched the Eagles spot next Saturday in the Class 5A State Championship Game against fellow Mid-Del rival Carl Albert. The Carl Albert Titans beat McGunness 51-28 in Noble later Friday night.

Waves of fans had plenty to cheer about when Carl Albert faced off with Collinsville on Friday night with a trip to the 5A Semifinals on the line. In a 52-14 rout, Carl Albert took care of business. That started early, when Kevin Sperry Jr connected with Christian Oku for a 43-yard touchdown pass on the opening Titans’ offensive series before following it up with an untouched 21-yard rushing touchdown of his own at the halfway point of the first quarter.

Brian Borland liked what he saw from Blake Cherry. The KU defensive coordinator was down in Oklahoma (the area he recruits for KU) this past May and stopped by Owasso High School. He watched Cherry practice during the Rams’ spring practice. As Cherry recalled, Borland walked by him after practice and gave him a wink. Due to NCAA recruiting rules, Borland couldn’t talk to Cherry, but through his high school coach the offensive lineman got word that he should call Borland.

ADAIR — The Vian Wolverines made it 2-for-2 on Class 2A playoff road games Friday night as they handled the Adair Warriors 45-20 in a second-round match-up. The Wolverines (8-4) will get a rematch against the Washington Warriors in the Class 2A state quarterfinals at 7 p.m. this Friday at East Central University’s Norris Field at Koi Ishto Stadium in Ada. The Warriors opened the season with a 55-13 rout of the Wolverines on Aug. 25 in Washington, Okla.

Rams off of a first-round bye-week, the Timberwolves got the win against Edmond North to advance. In the first quarter Friday night, the Rams struck first on their opening drive, Knox Dyson was in trouble, and dumped it off to Jason Moll... he broke loose and in for the first score of the game.
