CITRONELLE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Clarence “IV” Rivers and Destiny Jones couldn’t have imagined they’d become Citronelle High School’s prom king and queen, much less receive the announcement in a hospital room.

On March 29, Rivers and another passenger were critically injured in a crash that ended in the deaths of Jones’ brother and nephew. He has been in the hospital since that night, recovering from several surgeries that saved his life.

The pair have been through a lot, and Citronelle High School’s senior class voted them Prom King and Prom Queen.

While the duo can’t appear together at Friday night’s dance, they still got to enjoy wearing the regalia for this honor.

Senior class representatives and Assistant Principal Heather Hunt surprised the couple on Thursday with their crowns, sashes and flowers.
