CINCINNATI — Cincinnati police said they've located the mother of two young children found wandering outside alone in Westwood in the middle of the night.

A 2-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy were found walking in the area of East Tower Drive in Westwood around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Investigators said they located the mother around 8:20 a.m.

It is unclear why the children were walking around in the night. Police have not provided additional details about what led up to officers finding them.

"It breaks my heart because I have grandchildren. and anything can happen to them kids," said Nicole Smith, who lives in the complex.

Smith said many of the complex buildings are missing locks on the front door.

"They had just put a lock on our hall door about two months ago and it's broken already," she said.

Her neighbor, Brittnee, voiced similar concerns.

"I've tried to ask them, 'Hey, can you just like put bolts or something to make it harder to get in and out the doors?'" she said.

Brittnee also worries about the locks on the individual apartments.

"Your apartment doors, the locks are reachable," she said. "My three-year-old, she can reach to lock and unlock it."

Police have not said if the mother will face any charges.
