'He's a Colonel forever': Reds fans excited to welcome Northern Kentucky standout home this season
Opening Day brings all of Cincinnati together each year, but this year is a little more special for one Red in particular.
The 2023 season is a homecoming for catcher Luke Maile.
A native of Edgewood, Kentucky and a graduate from Covington Catholic, Maile signed a one-year deal with his hometown club in November after spending last year with the Cleveland Guardians.
Ahead of his first opening day with the Reds, Maile says being back home is really cool and he's getting used to it, but there's still a job to do.
"I'm being very careful to treat it like any other season," Maile said. "Because this isn't like a homecoming joyride, I'm here to win games. I mean, Thursday's going to be cool. I'm going to embrace it. Then we're going to get down to business."
That mentality is no surprise to Maile's alma mater. He graduated from Covington Catholic in 2009 and was an absolute force on the field as both a catcher and pitcher, being named Player of the Year and set records for RBI and home runs.
His coach, Bill Krumplebeck, called Maile the greatest North Kentucky player he's seen in his nearly 50 years at CovCath, describing him as an outstandingly dedicated leader and someone his current players still revere, especially now that he's back home.
"Well, we certainly have an outstanding catcher right now. And he looks up to Luke and our players are very excited to go have that opportunity," Krumplebeck said. "Luke will be back to talk to our team and help our team out when that opportunity arises. He's a part of this program. He's a Colonel forever."
