New Bern Historical Society appoints new leader

NEW BERN, N.C. (WITN) - A longtime educator is the new executive director of the New Bern Historical Society. Angela Franks will start in the role in November, taking over for Anthony Giardino, according to the organization’s press release. She brings administrative experience and an understanding of New Bern’s history and culture.

Restoration begins on Croatan forest recreation sites damaged by Hurricane Florence

CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) — Restoration work is underway on four Croatan National Forest recreation sites along the Neuse River damaged by Hurricane Florence in 2018. The Neuse River Recreation Sites Project covers Siddie Fields, Pine Cliff, Flanners Beach and Fishers Landing. Siddie Fields is first, getting a new restroom, wider parking, safer beach access, new picnic sites, and a pavilion.

Whatley to speak at get out the vote rally Saturday in Nashville

Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Michael Whatley is going to speak at a get out the vote rally this weekend in Nashville on his Democratic opponent’s home turf. The gathering is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Elks Lodge off East Birchwood Drive southeast of downtown, according to information provided by Nash County Republican Party Chairman Owen H. Strickland II. Whatley in his first bid for elected office is running against Nash County native Roy Cooper, who is no stranger to winning statewide contests. Whatley served as N.C. GOP chairman from 2019-24 and became then-presidential candidate Donald Trump’s choice to become the Republican National Committee chairman. Cooper is a two-time governor and a four-time N.C. attorney general who served in the N.C. Senate before that. Whatley was raised in Blowing Rock in Watauga County, and he lives in Gaston County. He was Trump’s preference in the March 3 Republican primary to be the GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate seat that is up for election on Tuesday. Before that, he was a news anchor at WBT radio in Charlotte, a traffic reporter, editor of The Charlotte Observer’s University City Magazine, News/Sports Director at WEGO-AM in Concord and a Swiss Army knife in local cable television.
