These North Carolina Bluffs Still Hide Trenches Civil War Soldiers Dug Over 160 Years Ago
High above a bend in the Roanoke River, a set of earthen walls has outlasted every soldier who shaped them. From the water, almost nothing shows except a split rail fence at the top of a steep clay bluff. Climb up, though, and the 1860s are waiting in plain sight....

Dickinson Avenue building owners want rezoning change
The owner of a century-old building in the downtown Dickinson Avenue corridor is seeking a zoning change that could allow more growth in the district. ELKCO LLC, a Charlotte- based company, requested a nearly 7,000-square-foot structure on Dickinson Avenue, about 60 feet southwest of Ficklen Street, be changed from downtown commercial fringe to downtown commercial zoning. The Greenville Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously voted to recommend the request at its Oct. 20 meeting. The request now goes to Greenville City Council for final approval. According to Pitt County tax records, the building, which was built in 1922, has four address numbers: 807, 809, 811 and 813. It has housed a variety of tenants, including the studio of sculptor Jonathan Bowling. The building was zoned downtown commercial fringe in the late 1960s, according to the commission’s meeting materials. Assistant Director of Planning Chantae Gooby said there are a few areas with downtown commercial fringe zoning left in the area. When a building almost runs to the property line, it’s a much more appropriate zoning, she said, because downtown commercial doesn’t have setbacks, vegetation or parking requirements. The downtown commercial zoning generally is for entertainment, recreation, urban office and retail uses. Microbreweries
