LAKE ELISNORE, Calif. (KNX) – A community is coming together to help the children of a couple killed in a Chino Hills crash.

Ruth and Gedion Mbatha died Sunday when they were hit by a wrong-way driver on the 71 Freeway. Ruth was 38 and Gedion was 43.

The couple leaves behind three kids, two boys, 12 and 7, and a 3-year-old girl.

The crash was reported around 2:30 a.m. According to KCAL, a car entered the wrong side of the freeway and hit six cars.

"We were completely heartbroken," Karla Gibson, the couple's neighbor told KNX News. "My husband had just given him a ride. They were outside barbecuing the night before. They were just sweet sweet people and we were shocked and devastated to hear these kids are going to be left without parents.”

Gibson said she was there when a relative told the couple’s oldest child about their parent’s death.

“It's just an indescribable feeling,” she said. “You just never want to hear, you know, a child scream and cry in that manner and disbelief that what he's hearing is actually true.”

Gibson created a GoFundMe for the couple’s children. As of Tuesday afternoon, more than $4,500 has been raised.
