One dead after car crashes into house on Montgomery Street in Chicopee

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – One person is dead after a car crashed into a home on Montgomery Street Saturday morning.

According to Hampden County District Attorney’s Office spokesman Jim Leydon, at approximately 2:43 a.m., the Chicopee Police Department saw a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed on Broadway Street.

As officers performed a traffic stop with the vehicle on Montgomery Street, the vehicle took off as the officer approached the vehicle. The officer then followed the vehicle in the vicinity of the 1000 block of Montgomery Street.

The officer observed the vehicle had struck the exterior wall of a home and ended up inside the residence. The vehicle and the house were on fire a short time after. Inside the car, there were four occupants, a driver, and three passengers, ages 19, 18, 17, and 13. First responders removed three of the passengers from the vehicle and sent them to Baystate Medical Center for treatment for their injuries. The fourth passenger died in the accident.

A resident of the home was hit by the vehicle and was inside the room that the vehicle crashed through. The resident was removed from the crash and was sent to Baystate Medical Center for treatment for their injuries. All of the other occupants of the home were able to exit safely before the house was on fire.

According to the Chicopee Police Department, Montgomery Street was closed from Dale Street to Simard Drive due to the accident. The street has since been reopened.

This investigation is conducted by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office’s Motor Vehicle Homicide Unit. 22News will continue to update this story as soon as more information becomes available.
