CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — University of Chicago police said they are investigating an attempted robbery on campus that took place Monday night.

A male student was walking alone near 60th Street and Ingleside Avenue at about 9 p.m. when he was approached by four people, according to university police.

One of them had a fake plastic gun, which the student grabbed. The group then hit him and tried to take his bags before getting away.

A security alert from the university said the student was not injured and discouraged students from resisting armed robbers unless absolutely necessary.

A student was robbed at gunpoint on campus over one week ago. The university said two males in a red Kia Soul took the student’s phone, keys and wallet.

Associate Vice President for Safety and Security Eric Health said students should walk in groups, know where the emergency phones are on campus and try not to be distracted by phones.
