The Chicago Bulls have an overwhelming need for a tried-and-tested point guard. As admirable a job as young guard Ayo Dosunmu has done, the team needs a seasoned veteran to help them reach new heights. This was evident when fiery guard Patrick Beverley took over point guard duties late in the season and fueled their late-season surge toward the Play-in Tournament.

With Beverley angling for one last hefty payday and fellow guards Dosunmu and Coby White also entering free agency, the Bulls now find themselves in a challenging position. Here are a couple of free agent point guards they may want to consider adding to their roster.

Russell Westbrook

As mentioned, the Bulls did well when the point guard reins were being handled by someone who’s been around the league for a while. Former league MVP Russell Westbrook fits that mold. A 15-year NBA veteran, Westbrook may no longer be in his prime, but he’s still capable of producing high-level stats. Last season while with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers, Russ put up 15.9 points, 7.5 assists, and 5.8 boards per game, all while shooting 43.6 percent from the field.

While not a shooter by trade, Westbrook’s ability to get to just about wherever he wants on the court — and finish when he gets there — could be invaluable for a Bulls team that needs more playmakers and facilitators.

Dennis Smith Jr.

After exploding onto the scene as a hyper-athletic point guard out of NC State and earning a spot on the 2018 All-Rookie Team, Dennis Smith’s once-promising career got derailed by one severe injury after another. Before this season, the most games Smith played was 37 for the Portland Trail Blazers. His last campaign with Charlotte, though, gave everyone glimpses of the player he used to be.

His ghastly three-point shooting (21%) will not help the Bulls, but his fearless driving ability and knack for attacking the rim could prove essential for Chicago.
