CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --The debate was heated Tuesday night on the Northwest Side-over where to house newly-arrived migrants.
Emotions were high at Wright College in the Dunning neighborhood as people argued over whether to have new migrants housed in the college’s gymnasium for two months-from June to August.
"I’m wondering what these people are afraid of. They’re afraid of a longer line at the Jewel checkout," one person questioned.
"We have seniors, children, disabled and vulnerable women. Do all these people have background checks," another speaker asked.
As of last night, nearly 10,000 migrants had been dropped off in Chicago since last August. They’re being housed in 20 shelters and three respite centers. A few hundred others spend the night at Chicago police stations.
