(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Mayoral candidate Paul Vallas was up before the City Club of Chicago Tuesday, and he became emotional when talking about a surprising endorsement he received last week.

Former Congressman Bobby Rush, co-founder of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, threw his support behind Vallas over Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson.

Vallas, who is endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7, choked up as he explained the significance of the moment.

“I got to know Bobby over the years, so when he came out and so strongly endorsed me, it was kind of an emotional moment for me, because it was like a vindication moment,” Vallas said.

Johnson spoke to the City Club a day earlier. The self-proclaimed progressive candidate is backed by the Chicago Teachers Union and has racked up a number of endorsements of his own. This week, Johnson said the Chicago-based band Wilco is backing him as the better candidate.

Election Day is April 4.
