Pickleball creates tug of war at North Side park: 'For sure, tensions have escalated'

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The increasingly popular game of Pickleball has caused some controversy at a small park in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, where residents have taken sides and accused each other of being less than cool-as-a-cucumber.

"For sure, tensions have escalated,” says Leslie Miller.

She started a petition to make Bauler Park a pickleball-free zone. She says the park should only be for children to play whatever they want to play.

The issue has caused some scenes, she says.

"Yes, and for sure it's ‘clickbait’-y -- to hear these stories between children and parents and pickeball players and neighbors."

One of the pickleball-playing neighbors is Julie Gauthier.

"I've never seen any bad behavior, but that's what we're getting accused of, and I haven't seen it,” Gauthier says. "And anyway, just somewhere in all of that, it just got all really tangled up. And that's unfortunate because I think we can all coexist here."

New Park District signs say pickle ball is okay from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the week, but that doesn't sit well with either side.
