CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the mass shooting in Nashville highlights how little we are doing as a society to keep such tragedies from repeating themselves.

Why Audrey Hale came to kill adults and children at the Covenant School she once attended is being investigated, but the how and what of the Nashville mass shooting are clear. And, Mayor Lightfoot said we must confront the reality that there are too many powerful weapons out in the community.

“In the city of Chicago, we know all too well what tragedy can come from weapons being in the hands of people who shouldn’t have them and particularly our young people. Folks, we can’t be bystanders in the face of this kind of violence,” Lightfoot said.

She said we’ve gotten very good at reacting to mass shootings, but not good at preventing more.

“What we have not become good at yet is solving the problem once and for all. We all know this unfortunately because we experience this on too regular a basis here in Chicago,” said the mayor.
