Chicago Bulls' historically awful road record from 1999 could get some company

The 1999 Chicago Bulls could have some company for the league's longest road losing streak for a defending champion.

The 1998-1999 Chicago Bulls will forever live in infamy as one of the worst teams in the franchise's storied history. Fresh off the last title of the second "three-peat," the team that wore the red and white for the Bulls the following season was far from championship-caliber. With just 13 wins and 37 losses in the lockout-shortened campaign, their record was the worst in the league, setting a bar that has yet to be matched.

However, while that Bulls squad still holds the historically bad mark for road records, they are about to get some company if the reigning champions Golden State Warriors don't turn things around.

Dark period in Bulls' history

With Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, Scottie Pippen, and even Phil Jackson all gone from the squad, the Bulls trotted out an almost-unrecognizable roster that featured holdovers Toni Kukoc, Ron Harper, Randy Brown, and Bill Wennington.

The ensuing season was a black mark in Bulls history, and the results spoke for themselves as there was even a horrendous 12-game road losing streak—which is the record for longest-ever by a defending champion. That winless road slump lasted over a month—from March 24 until April 30 before the Bulls finally snapped out of it with a victory over the Miami Heat.

Golden State on the same path

More than two decades later, the Warriors are on the same path, having lost 11 straight games on the road. The Steph Curry-led squad has not picked up a road win since January 30 but will have a fantastic chance to end that embarrassing streak when they face off against the rebuilding Houston Rockets on March 21.

The Rockets, though, are keen on putting Steph Curry and the Warriors in the record books and are confident heading to the game, having posted wins against the likes of the Boston Celtics, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the New Orleans Pelicans in their previous games.
