A woman was arrested last week after allegedly participating in a shoplifting game at a Walmart in Palm Coast, Florida. According to an FCSO News Release, on Monday, March 25, deputies responded to a report of a possible shoplifter at Walmart. Witnesses reported seeing 30-year-old Amber McCann leaving the store without showing her receipt for items in her cart, which raised suspicion.

Two much anticipated safe outdoor parking spaces for people experiencing homelessness in Denver won’t be opening after all. A contract with Colorado Safe Parking Initiative will become final at Tuesday’s Mayor-City Council meeting. The new contract removes the requirement for the initiative to add two more lots serving a total of 16 vehicles. That leaves just two lots that the initiative already operates. The city will pay $350,000 for the initiative to operate the lots.

Denver continues to invest in millions in rental and mortgage assistance programs and other ways to prevent people from losing their homes. The Safety, Housing, Education and Homelessness Committee of the City Council approved Wednesday almost $12 million in new spending for rental assistance programs. Receiving contracts were Brothers Redevelopment, Inc. for $4.4 million and The Community Firm, doing business as Community Economic Defense Project, for $6.6 million to be used for rental assistance. The money comes from the Temporary Rental Assistance and Utility program, or TRUA, according to city staff. The Community Firm also received a $758,000 contract to operate a hotline that will handle as many as 36,000 calls per year to connect residents to rental and utility assistance.

It’s a fair question: Have people experiencing homelessness moved to Denver for a free hotel room?. At least one man did. The mother of a missing man messaged me the other day to tell me she is looking for her son. She said he moved back to Denver from Florida thinking he could get a free hotel room as part of Denver Mayor Mike Johnston’s House1000 plan. Of course, those rooms all are full now. Also, most people who received the rooms were in established encampments that the mayor swept. There never were any rooms for people who might move to Denver one week to be housed the next.

The Scituate Animal Shelter of Massachusetts recently introduced Chewbacca, nicknamed Chewy, who they describe as a funny fella who loves everyone. “This adorable mutt is built like an oversized Shih Tzu and weighs 25 lbs. Since he was found as a stray and never claimed, we don't know much about his past.” Chewy has a personality as unique as his looks. "He is overly friendly with all, dogs included. He can come on a bit strong but in the kindest way. He wants everyone to be his friend!" states the Scituate Animal Shelter of Massachusetts, who is currently caring for Chewy until he finds his forever home.
