CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee. (WDEF) -The Happy Shoes Project collaborated with Erlanger to create the Children’s Backpack program.

The program aims to bring joy to children battling cancer and children in the NICU unit.

The backpacks are specially curated with items to bring hope and to cheer up patients. A children’s book and a coloring book are included in the backpack, as well as a voucher for a pair of “Happy Shoes.”

The Happy Shoes Project was started by Sandi Sammons who had colon cancer and posted pictures of her shoes. She would call them her “Happy Shoes” which sparked a project to help inspire and uplift people battling cancer.

Food City attended the event and gave a donation of $50,000.

Several notable members attended as well, including Erlanger Children’s Hospital’s CEO, Dr. Charles Wood and Food City’s president, Steve Smith.

Project founder, Keith Sammons, states, “With each step forward, we aim to bring hope, joy, and inspiration to those in need.”
