Longtime Georgia Ironman athlete dies after crash during race

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. — A longtime Georgia Ironman competitor has died after he crashed during a race, family members said.

Marshall Martin, 58, who was born in Rossville in North Georgia, was competing in the Ironman 70.3 in Chattanooga on May 21 when he crashed his bike.

The Ironman 70.3 is the length of half of the original Triathlon, which includes swimming, running and biking.

The crash happened near Highway 193 and Georgia Highway 2, according to WTVC.

Martin’s injuries included brain bleeds, a broken collarbone and eight broken ribs, the family said in a Caring Bridge page created to share updates.

“Marshall has finished his last race and crossed that final Ironman finish line. He received his final finisher medal with his entrance into Heaven!” his family wrote Monday. “This was his best race by far and he definitely saved the best for last!”

Martin had been competing in the Ironman races for more than 30 years.

His funeral will be held in Bentwood, Tenn. on June 5.
