A family of six spent Memorial Day working to rebuild their lives after a devastating fire.
That fire that sparked from a dryer destroyed Amanda Langston and her family's home on Dorris Street last Thrusday in Chattanooga's Alton Park neighborhood.
There was a lot of stuff we had, we built it and we bought it," says Langston. "Watching my house go down, I was very frustrated. I couldn't breathe and watching everything go up in smoke, it was just overwhelming.
Langston says they are devastated after the fire, and didn't expect it to burn so quickly.
"I went back to get my work shirt out of the dryer, I was getting ready for work. And when I got to my lunch room, the whole lunch room was on fire," says Langston.
Langston tried to put the flames out with a fire extinguisher, but wasn't successful.
"I got the fire extinguisher that we did have under the cabinet. I sprayed until we ran out. And so at that point, it was just overwhelming, it was already coming in to roost," says Langston.
Langston says she tried to get the fire out, but it grew too quickly.
The Chattanooga Fire Department says they found flames coming from the back of the building, and had it under control within minutes.
Colleen Keough is a coworker of Langston's at Mellow Mushroom.
"She's, you know, the sweetest, most gentle, loving, generous, helpful, hardworking person," says Keough.
She is helping the family raise money.
"I'm also a mom, and I can't imagine losing your home and the safety of the shelter for your three kids and your mother-in-law and yourself and your husband, and she carries a lot," says Keough.
For Langston, she's happy to see people being so generous.
"We lost everything, so people have, like I said, been bringing back clothing items and food items and stuff," says Langston.
Langston says for everyone to make sure they pay attention to their dryers, because you never know when this could happen to you.
The family has a GoFundMe page and is asking for donations. Their goal is $10,000. As of Friday afternoon, just under $3,000 has been raised.
