CPD Offers Shooting and Robbery Updates

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – At this week’s press briefing Wednesday, Chattanooga Police offered updates on a few incidents.

One incident was a recent shooting at a Renaissance Park.

Assistant Chief Harry Sommers said that a bicyclist was picking up trash when he was approached by a group of people, leading to a confrontation.

That person was then shot in the arm.

The suspect fled.

After an investigation they determined that the suspect, Warren McCarter, had fled out of state.

Sommers said, “He unfortunately has been found, but he has been found deceased. He has been found in Akron, Ohio, and the officials there tell us he died of a drug overdose, or what appears to be a drug overdose.”

The person who was shot only suffered minor injuries.

CPD also discussed the robbery that occurred at the Regions Bank in Downtown Chattanooga on Monday.

They didn’t have any substantial updates as the suspect is still on the run.

Chief Celeste Murphy did offer some advice for banks to better protect against these attempts.

Chief Murphy said, “Just like with all banks, if they have security, they should make sure that they’re diligent about watching their premises. Letting us know if they feel that there is any threats in the area. We’re always collaborating with businesses and doing safety assessments with them.”

CPD said they are at normal operations as they will be patrolling Downtown as usual.

The investigation into the robbery is a joint investigation with federal officials.
