Staff report

CHATHAM — Chatham Glenwood freshman pitcher Irie Lohrenz tossed a one-hit shutout and the Titans pounded out 15 hits to throttle Mahomet-Seymour 13-0 in the semifinals of the Class 3A Chatham Glenwood Sectional softball tournament on Tuesday.

Glenwood (29-1-1), the top sub-sectional seed, plays the other top seed in Mount Zion (31-5) at 4:30 p.m. on Friday for the sectional championship. Mount Zion defeated No. 2 seed Springfield High 7-0 in Tuesday’s first semifinal at Chatham.

Lohrenz dominated third seed Mahomet-Seymour (13-19) as she struck out five and walked none. The only hit for the Bulldogs came on a single by Jenna Wade that led off the bottom of the third inning.

Glenwood scored four runs each in the second and third innings and tacked on five more in the fifth. Makinzie McCaskell, Ryleigh Kiel and Taryn Griffith each had RBI singles in the second and Kiel scored a run on an error to give the Titans a 4-0 lead.

McCaskell (2-for-3, three runs) highlighted the third with a two-run base hit and Kiel (2-for-3, two runs) collected an RBI double to help push the lead to 8-0. Griffith (2-for-4) delivered a two-run single in the fifth.

Lohrenz got support up and down Glenwood’s lineup as Jenna Hazard finished 3-for-3 with a run and Sophia Geranios had a pair of hits with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Titans are on a nine-game winning streak, with their only loss being an 8-7 setback to Edwardsville in the second game of a doubleheader on April 14.

Mount Zion’s victory over Springfield was its 11th-straight win. The Senators ended their successful season 25-7.

Senior pitcher Dakota Harrison kept Springfield’s bats in check by striking out 10 and walking zero in a three-hit shutout. Losing pitcher Mia Volpert had two hits, including a double, and Bella Pagliara singled for the Senators.

The Braves scored five in the top-half of the first and two in the second to account for all the game’s runs. Springfield committed five errors and Volpert was charged with seven runs and four earned on 11 hits. She fanned eight and walked none.

Audri Johnson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Harrison had two hits with a double and a run scored for Mount Zion. Kennedy Highley doubled and finished 2-for-3 with two runs in the win.
