WEST UNION- After a somewhat controversial loss to the Princeton Tigers back on Wednesday, April 17, the Greenbrier West Lady Cavaliers have ripped off three straight victories over James Monroe (18-0), Doddridge County (7-5), and Bridgeport (10-2).

After just dominating the Lady Mavericks—a game that saw the Cavs rack up 12 hits, including five for extra bases—Greenbrier West toughed out a double-header on Saturday against two solid opponents.

Against the Lady Bulldogs from Doddridge, the game was a back-and-forth-pitcher’s duel to start. Brilee Redden and the Bulldogs’ Makenna Curran were seeing which one could outduel the other as the game ran to the fourth inning in a scoreless 0-0 tie.

But in the top half of that frame, the Cavs offense woke up and got going in a big way. Redden started with a double then Preslee Treadway singled her home for a 1-0 Greenbrier West lead. Two batters later, Brooklyn Adkins bunted, and Treadway scored on a throwing error by Doddridge catcher Isabelle Holt. That made the score 2-0, Cavaliers. West got a third run in the inning when Julia Herndon stole home after a pickoff throw down to second base and after the top of the fourth, West led 3-0.

However, much like the Cavaliers, the Bulldogs offense arose as well.

Three straight hits to lead off the bottom of the inning put the score at 3-2, then it went to a tie at 3-all when Curran scored on a passed ball. The score stayed tied after four.

The Cavs jumped back out in front in the fifth on a 2-run single from Treadway that scored Diana Porter and Maddie Fields. West was feeling good again after that with a 5-3 advantage.

But Doddridge answered again to tie it up in the bottom of the fifth. Olivia See did just that and had no problem with her vision when she laced an RBI single that made the score 5-4, West, and then Hadley Ross followed with another RBI base hit. Redden was able to strikeout Abigail Thomas to keep the score knotted at 5-apiece.

Fortunately for coach Tony Hinkle and the Cavalier fans, West used the sixth inning to go back ahead and seal the deal. Porter singled on a bunt and on the play, Kyndall Taylor scored on an error. Porter would score on a passed ball two batters later to make the score 7-5. Redden had a perfect seventh inning where she got a groundout, a popout, and a flyout to end the game on the winning side.

Treadway went 3-4 with a run scored and had three RBIs. Porter was 1-2 with two runs scored.

In the pitcher’s circle, Redden picked up the “W” in a complete game performance. She allowed six hits, three earned runs, and struck out eight Bulldog hitters.

Curran had 12 strikeouts on the mound for Doddridge County.

The Cavs marched back on the field a little later and faced the Bridgeport Lady Indians.

After falling behind 1-0 early in the top of the first inning, the Cavaliers made it all about themselves from that point forward.

In the bottom of the first, Brooke Patterson scored on an error from a ball lined into play by Treadway and Kyndall Taylor had a 2-run single for a 3-1 Greenbrier West lead after one.

Treadway then knocked in Fields in the second inning on a single and the Lady Cavaliers (14-6) took a 4-1 lead.

Bridgeport tried to stay close and make a comeback and got one run in the third to make it 4-2, but that would be as close as they got the rest of the way. Some key plays for the Cavs in the closing moments were an RBI double from Herndon, an RBI hit from Patterson, and a run-scoring hit from Redden. After it was over, the scoreboard read 10-2 in favor of Greenbrier West.

Friday was coach Hinkle’s birthday, and two wins the day after is a good gift to receive.

Patterson, Herndon, and Taylor all had two hits each. Patterson, Treadway, and Taylor each had two RBIs.

Taylor was also good on the mound. She pitched five innings, allowed just two hits, and struck out two.

West heads to Shady Spring this Monday, April 22 for a 5:30 PM first pitch with the Lady Tigers.
