St. John’s Concludes Road Trip with Cavalier Classic

Jarrard enters the weekend after being named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 23, 2023) – The St. John's softball team will travel to their third state of the season, with a five-game road trip with games in Charlottesville, Va. And Farmville, Va. beginning on Friday.
 
The Red Storm will open with just one game on Friday, a 10 a.m. contest against George Washington. The Johnnies will play a doubleheader on their final day in Charlottesville. St. John's will start Saturday with a 10 a.m. game against Howard before closing the day against Virginia, first pitch is set for 3 p.m. On Sunday, the Johnnies will travel to Farmville to conclude the weekend with back-to-back games against Longwood and UMES opening at 11 a.m.
 
Live Stats will be provided for each game on RedStormSports.com. The only game that will be streamed will be Saturday's 3 p.m. contest against Virginia, on ACCXN.
 
Sophomore London Jarrard was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after her two home run, five RBI performance against No. 13 Georgia in the second game of the weekend. In the third inning, the Carlsbad, Calif. native cranked a three-run homer over the wall in center to collect her first three RBIs of the game. Jarrard was not done yet, adding two more RBIs on a two-run shot in the seventh inning cutting the deficit in half.
 
St. John's continued its gauntlet of a schedule last weekend with three of its five games against ranked opponents. In the first game of the weekend, Carolina Zamudio pitched a two-hit complete game against Charlotte, but was unable to gain the run support she needed and the 49ers earned the 1-0 victory. In the early afternoon game on Saturday, the Red Storm battled with No. 13 Georgia. After taking a 1-0 lead, the Bulldogs responded with six runs. The Johnnies would cut into the lead, but could never overtake Georgia, falling 9-7. A loss to Charlotte in the nightcap, 5-1 and a pair of losses to No. 19 Stanford and No. 13 Georgia concluded the weekend for the Johnnies.
 
Peyton Cody laced a single up the middle for her 100th career-hit on Sunday against No. 13 Georgia. In the first game of the weekend against the Bulldogs the Carlsbad, Calif. native belted a solo home run in the seventh inning for her 99th hit of her career. In the second matchup against the Bulldogs on the weekend, the seventh inning proved fruitful once again for Cody. On the first pitch she saw that inning, she roped a shot up the middle to join the 100-hit club
 
George Washington enters the game 4-3 after a pair of wins in each of the first two weekends. GW earned a pair of wins last weekend over ETSU and Delaware and fell to South Carolina and Western Kentucky in the Carolina Clash.
 
Freshman Rose Cano leads the Colonials in the circle with three victories. She also touts a 1.38 ERA across 25.2 innings so far this season. On the offensive side of the ball, graduate student Arizona Ritchie leads GW hitting at a .417 clip with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Head Coach Chrissy Schoonmaker enters her second season at George Washington. She was named A10 Coach of the Year after she guided GW to their second straight A10 title.
 
St. John's fell to GW in the only meeting of the series on March 17, 2013. The Colonials took home the victory, 4-1.
 
Howard started the season 2-2 at the NFCA Leadoff Classic, and returns to action on Friday with its first game against Longwood on Friday.
 
Sidney Fletcher leads the Bison offensive attack with a .500 average, and .600 OBP, which both rank in the top 50 in the country, and top 3 in the MEAC. Head Coach Victoria Tyson enters her sixth season with the Bison. She guided the Bison to its second MEAC Title and NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
 
In the only meeting between the two schools, the Red Storm were victorious, 8-1, on March 19, 2016.
 
Virginia enters the Cavalier Classic 6-4, after back-to-back weekends in Houston, Tex. and Chapel Hill, N.C. The Cavs lost to No. 23 Maryland twice, 2-1 and 6-4.
 
UVA's juggernaut M.C. Eaton is top 15 in the nation in home runs with four and has compiled 10 RBIs, a .290 average, and .710 slugging percentage, and 22 total bases. Sarah Coon has recorded three home runs in the first 10 games of the season. The Cavs are led by a two-headed monster in the circle. Eden Bigham has registered a .86 ERA, two shutouts, and 30 strikeouts. Molly Grube has earned three victories while posting a 1.20 ERA, two shutouts and 11 strikeouts. Head Coach Joanna Hardin enters her seventh season with the program. In 2022, she led the team to 13 ACC victories, the most in program history.
 
The Cavaliers are 2-1 against the Red Storm all-time. On Feb. 8, 2019, the Johnnies won the last meeting against UVA, 4-3.
 
In the opening weekend, Longwood notched a signature win against No. 4 Florida State, 5-4 in Tallahassee. The Lancers finished the first two weekends, 4-5.
 
Sophomore Jaden Pone has exploded offensively in the first nine games. The sophomore is top 40 in the country in hits (16), stolen bases (8), and batting average (.516). Maggie Chapin has accounted for half of the Lancers wins, and tallied a 2.92 ERA with 18 strikeouts. In her second season at the helm of the program, Head Coach Kathy Riley led the team to share of the Big South title last season.
 
The Lancers lead the all-time series against the Red Storm, 2-1. St. John's dropped the most recent meeting, 10-2 on Feb. 12, 2012.
 
UMES (1-3) played its first four games of the season last weekend, ending with a 4-2 win against South Carolina State on Sunday.
 
Freshman Jaycee Holt leads the Hawks hitting .583 with seven hits and two RBIs. Only two pitchers have entered the circle for UMES. Katelyn Smitchko has appeared in each game this season. She has totaled 13.1 innings with four strikeouts. Head Coach Karla Ross enters her fourth season at the helm of the program. She was named MEAC Coach of the Year in 2022, following a 13-8 conference record.
 
The two programs have only met once in history. St. John's was victorious 7-2 in a neutral site game as well on Feb. 8, 2015.
