The weather on Memorial Day was a mixed bag and very location dependent.
While southeast Ohio and northern West Virginia enjoyed sunshine, dry weather and afternoon temperatures in the 80s, southern and eastern West Virginia saw frequent bouts of showers and readings only in the 60s.
Far southern West Virginia received a half foot of rain and widespread significant flooding in parts of McDowell and Mercer counties thanks to a persistent southeast flow that rose over the mountains and resulted in a stationary band of torrential rain.
Central West Virginia split the difference with some morning showers followed by breaks of sun, especially late in the day. However, a few more scattered showers and thundershowers have flared up in the evening and like all the rain this weekend the track is to the west, not east. That's because the rain is pinwheeling around an area of low pressure centered in North Carolina.
The high temperature of 75 in Charleston marked one of the coolest Memorial Days in recent memory, although not as cool as in 2003 when we only reached 65 degrees.
Just two years ago, the Saturday and Sunday preceding Memorial Day featured afternoon temperatures in the 50s, although that Monday we rebounded to 73.
Summer temperatures will return just as soon as we head back to work (and in some instances school). That low pressure system will move off the coast Tuesday, and the jetstream will begin to lift north and form a ridge.
Temperatures today reached the mid to upper 80s all around us, but thanks to the clouds and showers most of us didn't experience that. With the low retreating east tomorrow we'll easily crack 80 degrees, but we'll have to get through some thick fog in the morning.
Temperatures should get a bit warmer each and every day this week approaching 90 by Friday and Saturday. We haven't hit that number yet this year, and it would be our latest doing so since at least 2016 when we topped the mark on the first day of June.
Rain chances will be low, and there's just enough moisture for a pop up afternoon shower or thundershower Tuesday, but after that we look to remain dry.
By the weekend a mountain shower or storm may develop but most of us should be rain-free making for some much better pool weather.
