It's the end of an era on Charleston's West Side.
The Charleston Department Store closed its doors Saturday after 102 years in business.
Over the decades, the store has supplied customers with a variety of different clothing and school uniforms.
The owner announced in January he was packing up the business, giving loyal shoppers a few final months.
On Saturday, the final day of business at the iconic store brought up a lot of memories for Donnie Wilson, the store's manager and a long-time employee.
"I’ve been here 44 years and I’m very sad. This is my life,” Wilson said. “I started out at the old store, and I was here when they cut the ribbon on this store. Now, I’m going to go out with them. But I have a lot of friends here and I will keep that with them. And I have a lot of friends with these people here. They’ve all called me. A lot of people have called me today, so, that makes you feel real good, too.”
The land won't be empty for long. Earlier this year, a residential rental company announced it is taking over the two-acre store location and creating new affordable housing. Builders expect to start the project sometime this summer.
