Diamond Heels keep season alive with shutout win

The North Carolina Tar Heels are still alive in the Terre Haute Regional as we move to day three. After losing to Iowa on Friday, the Tar Heels faced elimination against Wright State but delivered with a one-hit shutout and a 5-0 win.

Max Carlson and Dalton Pence combined for a one-hit shutout of Wright State to keep the Tar Heels alive as the pitching was dominant. Carlson threw 6.2 innings, allowing just 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 5. Pencen relieved him with a 2.1-inning performance as he struck out one batter and didn’t allow a walk.

While UNC’s pitching shut down the Wright State lineup, Mac Horvath got the bats going.

Horvath recorded an RBI on a double-play ground out and then hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 4-0. From there, Johnny Castagnozzi recorded a single in the eighth inning to close the scoring.

UNC will face Iowa once again on Sunday morning in a do-or-die game. The winner advances to face Indiana State in the night game.
