Ashley High women’s soccer team defeats Chapel Hill, advances to 4A championship game
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The top-seeded Ashley High School women’s soccer team continued the best season in school history Tuesday night, defeating second-ranked Chapel Hill High School 2-1 in overtime to earn a spot in the 4A state championship game.
After a scoreless first half, Ashley fell behind the visiting Tigers in the second half 1-0 after a goal by Audrey Yazejian. The score stayed that way until the final minute of regulation, when Chapel Hill’s team was called for a handball in the box resulting in a penalty kick for Ashley. Screaming Eagles’ sophomore Savannah Monset got the call, and came through with the goal that sent the game into overtime.
It did not take long for the home team to score in the extra period. Sophie Morvil missed on a header try, but got her own rebound and found Karina Peat, who found the back of the net for a 2-1 advantage that would hold up for the victory.
“It looked bleak there for a little bit,” said Ashley High head coach Erik Graf. “We had our chances and it seemed almost like the soccer gods weren’t going to be on our side today. But the girls have never given up all season long.”
Ashley will face Ardrey Kell High School in the 4A championship at 7 p.m. on Friday, at the UNC Greensboro Soccer Stadium. More information on tickets for the game will be released by the NCHSAA later this week.
