Top 5 Fast Food Joints in North Phoenix

(Phoenix, AZ) Okay, nobody wants to admit they are a fast food fiend, but let's be honest, sometimes nothing beats kicking that midday or late night drive-thru craving. One of the glorious things about the Phoenix metripolitan area is your pick of just about any restaurant, and that extends to fast food, too. Here's my personal top 5 picks for North Phoenix area. For the purpose of this article, I've limited "fast food" candidates to those which offer a drive-thru.

On-Demand Food Delivery? When to Tip in Cash, When in-App Tipping is Best

(Phoenix, AZ) It’s 2019 and you can order anything to your home within an hour through the convenience of your phone. As far as food delivery goes, most of the AZ market is split between GrubHub, DoorDash, UberEats, and Postmates. While they offer great services for customers, there have been a lot of complaints (and a number of lawsuits!) of these services taking advantage of and stealing from their drivers.

MacAlpine's Diner and Soda Fountain: A Portal to 1928

(Phoenix, AZ) Antique lovers: if you haven't been to MacAlpine's, drop whatever you're doing and head there, now. Everyone else: follow the antique lovers. Located on the east side of 7th Street, south of Thomas, MacAlpine's is a hidden treasure kept sacred within a quaint antique mall. Inside the door and around the corner is an authentic diner outfitted with vintage equipment, poodle skirted waitresses, jukeboxes, and a little slice of something unlike anywhere else in the valley.

SaddleCreek Coffee Co: A Charming Cafe that isn't Starbucks

(Cave Creek, AZ) Recently, I posted about my discontent with virtually every coffee shop in my area being a Starbucks, and the smattered local alternatives failing to stay in business (Boss Coffee at Scottsdale and Pinnacle Peak as the most recent casualty).

Lunch in North Scottsdale? Flo's.

(Scottsdale, AZ) I've gone to Flo's at least a dozen times over the course of the past few years and always leave pleasantly satisfied. With two locations off of Frank Lloyd Wright (one east of Scottsdale the other east of Thompson Peak), lunch at Flo's in the North Scottsdale area is second to none.

Sushi Sleeper Pick: AJ's Fine Foods

(Scottsdale, AZ) Sushi lovers can attest that a sushi craving is one of the most persistent cravings one can get. And in this neck of the woods, it can be expensive, too. The sushi scene in the Northeast valley is underwhelming, to say the least. There are far too many restaurants where you'll spend a lot to get pretty run-of-the-mill stuff.

Goodwill vs Savers: Best Thrifting in North Valley

(Phoenix, AZ) It's 2019. If you're not thrifting, you're doing it wrong. No longer a hobby for the Auntie Carlas and Grandma Betty's of the world, everyone is looking to consignment and thrift stores to enhance their wardrobe with high end and vintage pieces. Whether to stay on top of seasonal trends, or pick out luxury pieces that make an outfit pop, thrifting is an excellent way to bag a better look at a fraction of the price.

PSA: The Lobby is at the Front of the Gym, NOT the Leg Machines

(Phoenix, AZ) I've been going to Mountainside Fitness several times a week when I'm not at school for the past couple of years. For the most part, it fits my needs perfectly: They have everything I need for my workouts, it's not too expensive ($44/month on an individual pass), and the Desert Ridge location is close to my house. As I close my membership after every Summer and Winter break, I'm always greeted with welcome back promotions and fee-waiving to get me to start up again (This recent membership was first month free + $25 Amazon giftcard).

Starbucks Swallows Local Competition

(Scottsdale, AZ) I am woefully typing this out from the back corner of one of the numerous Starbucks locations around nearby. I've just found out that another one of my go-to spots to sit down, sip on a tea, and get some work done has closed down. Boss Coffee at Scottsdale and Pinnacle Peak now sits, vacant, reclaimed by the landlord for unpaid rent.
