Merced County Mom Charged With Murdering 3 Children

LE GRAND — The mother of three children found dead inside a central California home has been charged with murder, officials said Thursday. Deputies doing a welfare check found the children, ages 8, 5, and 3, Wednesday in a Merced County apartment. They also found their mother, Patricia Ortiz, with what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office said.

Editor’s note: In partnership with the Fresno County Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Committee, the Office of the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools hosts the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Art, Essay, and Speech Contest. Students in grades K-12 learn about and respond to the teachings of Dr. King. Students can choose to create a work of art, write an essay and/or deliver a speech. The contest culminates with an exhibition and awards program to honor the students and their hard work. This year’s awards program will be held on Feb. 8 at 6 pm at the Clovis Veterans Memorial District.

Sometime during the spring of 1985 while restoring the 1901 Mariposa Hotel in downtown Mariposa, I began a conversation with an elderly gentleman who I first thought was a passerby.
