Temporary lane closures across area dams set for this week

One lane of State Highway 178 across Bull Shoals Dam will close from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Wednesday, and one lane of State Highway 177 across Norfork Dam will close from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Thursday. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers advises the lane closures are necessary to conduct routine bridge inspections.

Local attorney arrested, charged with assault, disorderly conduct

A local attorney was arrested Friday and charged with assault and disorderly conduct stemming from a recent disturbance at the Arkansas Workforce Center. Thirty-year-old Cody Shawn Dennis, who lists a Bull Shoals address, was booked into the Baxter County Detention Center at just after 2 p.m. and released on his own recognizance about 20 minutes later.

Basketball season starts Monday in Arkansas

Basketball makes up much of the local Monday schedule, as the season gets underway for non-football schools. Izard County will begin hosting the Bad Boy Mowers Classic in the Cougar Den. Omaha meets Pangburn for a doubleheader starting with the girls at 5 p.m., and Mountain Home Christian Academy’s boys meet the host Cougars at 7:30.

2 local counties move to 1st congressional district under new map

When Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson let a new congressional election map become law last week without his signature, much of the talk across the state concerned the division of Pulaski and Sebastian counties. But the new map has significant implications closer to home, with two nearby counties, Marion and Boone, moving from the third to the first congressional district, as Baxter County did 20 years ago.

Minor earthquake reported in Baxter County

A minor earthquake has been reported in northern Baxter County. The United States Geological Survey says the magnitude 2.1 quake was recorded 4.6 miles east-northeast of Midway Saturday afternoon at 3:29. The location is 5 miles north of Mountain Home, nearly 37 miles southwest of West Plains and over 42 miles east-northeast of Harrison.

James Edward Wilmans of Mountain Home, Arkansas, passed away October 11, 2021, in Mountain Home, Arkansas at the age of 43. He was born July 1, 1978, in Newport, Arkansas, the son of Gary “Crowbar” Russell and Francyne Zeigler.
