Yates County getting $150,000 in opioid lawsuit settlement money

Yates County is getting another $150,000 in opioid lawsuit settlement money. The state sued Johnson & Johnson and other drug manufacturers in 2019, claiming they were responsible for the recent rise in opioid overdose deaths. Johnson & Johnson settled out of court, agreeing to pay the state $230 million. The Yates County Legislature authorized the settlement agreement on behalf of the county last September. Yates County Administrator Nonie Flynn says even though part of the settlement money can be spent however the county wants, it will all go to education, prevention, and treatment.

Yoga is back outdoors on the Landing

PENN YAN — As both a benefit and a way to enjoy the Keuka Outlet Trail, Jan Corning and Catherine Graves are recommencing yoga classes at the landing on Water Street. The classes are open to all, and taught from beginner to intermediate with modifications to accommodate all who attend.

Yates County will Use Cayuga County Communication Tower

Yates County is expanding its emergency communications and they’ll be using a Cayuga County tower that’s located in Seneca County to help. FingerLakes1 reports Yates County has reached an agreement to use the tower in Ovid for free to increase coverage to the eastern parts of the county. As part of the agreement, Yates County will put a standby generator and a fuel tank on the site as well as a shelter for equipment.

Yates County Sheriff’s Office donates surplus equipment to Ukraine

The Yates County Sheriff’s Office recently made a donation of surplus equipment to aid Ukrainian forces in their defense against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Last month, the Sheriff’s Office was made aware of a request from the Ukrainian American Council (UACC) for surplus equipment. The county Legislature passed a resolution in April that allowed the YCSO to make this donation.

‘Click It or Ticket’ Campaign begins in Yates County

Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike is reminding drivers about the lifesaving benefits of wearing a seat belt every day, and especially this spring, during the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) national Click It or Ticket high-visibility enforcement effort. The national seat belt campaign, which coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, runs from May 23 to June 5, 2022.

Yates County students' art celebrated

Art created by middle and high school students in Penn Yan, Dundee and Marcus Whitman school districts is being praised for its creativity, thoughtfulness and talent. The Arts Center of Yates County’s annual student show will be on exhibit through Saturday, May 21. The show featured two- and three-dimensional work and photography created by students. This year’s work includes ceramic, soap and wire sculptures; paintings in pastel, watercolor and acrylic as well as encaustic wax; and photography that ranges from traditional composition to digitally manipulated and “message” work. Several pieces combine technology and art.
