Ore. FF-EMT killed in crash with log truck

FLORENCE, Ore. — A volunteer firefighter and EMT was killed on her way to work this week. Sarah Susman, 22, was driving on the highway in a Toyota Prius when a logging truck tipped over, crashing into Susman’s vehicle, according to Oregon State Police, KVAL reported. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Man cited with three coolers of crab

A Salem man was cited for allegedly taking 10 times the number of crabs he was allowed by his permit, including 95 female crabs. According to a press release from the Newport Police Department, at about 1 a.m. Sept. 16, a Newport police officer was conducting routine area patrols in the public parking lot near the area of Rogue Brewery in South Beach. The officer encountered a group of people standing next to a vehicle, one of whom sat down quickly on top of an ice chest on the ground as the officer approached.

Siuslaw volleyball was successful last night as they traveled to Marist Catholic to take on the Spartans. The Vikings won in straight sets. 25-11, 25-17 and 25-15. In the second set the girls rallied from a 13-6 deficit with Zoe Alberty serving 4 aces to help keep the team on top in the set. Hayden Muller had 33 digs and 10 perfect passes on the night according to coach Kari Blake. Marist was the Vikings first league game of the season leading to a 1-0 start in the Sky-Em league. Fire department: Western Lane Ambulance District employee killed in Hwy 126 crash

FLORENCE, Ore. - Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue says a part-time ambulance district employee died Monday morning in a traffic crash on her way to work. "We are very saddened to report that Sarah Susman, one of our part time Western Lane Ambulance District employees, was tragically killed in a motor vehicle collision this morning on her way to work on Hwy 126," the fire department announced on Facebook. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends and to all of our WLAD and SVFR team members in this difficult time. As we hear more about a memorial service for Sarah we will pass that information along."

The joy of creating art

Though she grew up in an artistic household — the only child of a journeyman and librarian — Jill Myer never imagined she would create art for a living. “Both of my parents are creative individuals,” said Myer. “I grew up in the ’70s when everyone lived on what they had. We didn’t have credit cards. We made do. We made things, and we fixed things. And that’s the heart of an artist. ‘How do I make that? How do I represent that in a way no one else has done?’ I came by it pretty naturally.”
