NWS volunteer weather observer needed in Wyoming County

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The National Weather Service Office in Buffalo is looking for a volunteer to report weather observations in southern Wyoming County. The duties of a Coop weather observer for the National Weather Service include taking measurements of precipitation, snowfall, and snow depth daily each morning and reporting them to the Buffalo office. This is a volunteer position, though an appropriate rain gauge and snow measuring stick would be provided for you.

GCC’s TRiO Upward Bound Program awarded $3 million grant

The U.S. Department of Education has announced that Genesee Community College’s TRiO Upward Bound Program will receive a five-year, $1.5 million federal Upward Bound grant for both Genesee and Wyoming Counties ($3 million total) to help more low-income students who would be the first members of their families to earn degrees, to prepare for and enroll in college.

The County is asking everyone to pitch in on water conservation efforts through the peak of summer heat.

Woman sentenced for stealing money from Wyoming County Chamber of Commerce

Warsaw, N.Y. — A former Wyoming County Chamber of Commerce employee has been sentenced for stealing money from the chamber. Kelly Ashcraft, 45, was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty in March to stealing $100,000 from the chamber by forging the signature of a chamber employee and failing to make entries in chamber business records as required.
