The first criminal jury trial since the Supreme Court of Texas put a halt to in-person proceedings due to the Covid 19 pandemic, took place last week in the 402nd Judicial District Court of Wood County. Jury selection was held on Monday, June 7th, and the trial concluded on Wednesday, June 9th.

Mary Mangum Gongre 1941-2021

Mary Mangum Gongre, 79, of Winnsboro, passed away in the early hours of May 27, 2021 in Tyler. Mary was born Sept. 9, 1941 in Dallas to Jake and Mae Skiles Mangum. She grew up in Irving, graduating from Irving High School. In 1979 she moved to Wood County and began working for Wood County Electric Co-op as a cashier and retired in February 2004 after 25 years with the company as engineering secretary. In Mary’s spare time she enjoyed trying her luck at the casinos and listening to Elvis. When Mary wasn’t out winning money, she loved to garden and tend to her flowerbeds.

Billy Ray Blunt, 75, of Quitman returned to his heavenly home on Friday, May 21, 2021. A memorial service for Billy will be held at a later date with his family. Billy was born on Feb. 5, 1946 to parents Nolan Levi and Della Pauline (Butler) Blunt in Peniel. He grew up in a very musical family. He loved to sing and play the guitar, especially with his mother and The Hainesville Aires. Billy was also a great craftsman, who loved to build all kinds of things. Wood County Sheriff’s Office May 19 - May 26

Deputy Andrew Morrison took a report of burglary from the owner of a residence on CR 3854. The man reportedly told the home’s current tenants they could have the contents of the home with the exception of three items. Two of those three pieces (a wooden kitchen safe and a bedside table) were now missing from the residence. The total value of the missing items is approximately $1,000. Morrison recorded information regarding possible suspects and forwarded the case to Criminal Investigations.
