City of Madison declares energy alert through Wednesday

The City of Madison has declared an energy alert for the next couple of days of hot weather in our area. The alert begins today and lasts through Wednesday night. During this time, city electric consumers, both residential and business, are encouraged to voluntarily conserve or limit energy usage, which will assist in controlling the peak demand on the power system.

Commission sets hearing date on ordinance regarding chickens in city limits

The Madison City Commission will be considering an ordinance regarding keeping chickens within city limits. As part of the commissioners’ consent calendar items on their meeting agenda Monday, they approved setting a hearing date on an ordinance to permit the keeping and maintenance of brooding chicks and hens for egg and meat sources in the city.

Madison Central School Board approves hiring of new high school teacher

The Madison Central School Board approved the hiring of a new high school teacher during a special meeting on Monday. The board approved the hiring of Phillip Thramer as a high school science teacher for the district and Quiz Bowl Advisor at a total salary of just more than 54-thousand dollars. Thramer most recently worked as a high school teacher in the Manhattan, Kansas public school system. He replaces Dawn Wiebers, who recently resigned from the position.

City moves deadline for adopting budget

The Madison City Commission is moving the city’s deadline for adopting it’s 2022 budget. During their meeting Monday, commissioners approved first reading of an ordinance to move the municipal budget deadline. City Finance Officer Sonya Wilt told commissioners what the budget hearing and approval dates will be under the new ordinance.

Both Madison Teams Combine for Three Wins on Monday

It was all wins for both Madison teams in the SD VFW 16U Class A Region 2 Tournament on Monday. In game one for Madison Black, Lucas Mork and Mike Peters combined for a no-hitter in the 9-0 win against Claremont. Mork pitched six and had seven strikeouts. On the offense, Kayden Gehrels had a hit, three RBIs, and scored once. Joe Gors added a hit and an RBI.

Canova Earned Two Wins in Great Start to SD VFW 16U Tournament

Canova grabbed two wins to start regional play in the SD VFW Tournament. Canova had a nine-run victory over Emery in the opening round of the Class B Region 5 Tournament. Luke Koepsell added three hits, with two runs driven in and scored twice. Four pitchers combined to finish the game for Canova.

Amateur baseball roundup: Flandreau racks up 23 hits in District 4B win over Canova

COLMAN -- Flandreau racked up a whopping 23 hits en route to a 14-2 win in eight innings over Canova in District 4B amateur baseball action on Tuesday. Jake Patterson went 5 of 5 and drove in a run, while Grant Hieb, Keith Cutler and Bret Severtson had four hits apiece. Hieb hammered a three-run homer and drove in four runs. Severtson knocked in three runs, while Cutler drove in two runs.

Canova Loses in Class B State Championship to Canistota

Canistota won the 2021 SD VFW 14U Class B State Tournament Championship against Canova. They scored 11 in the top of the fifth to help secure the win. Luke Koepsell had three hits and scored twice in the loss. Canistota stole seven. Each of the three Canova hurlers allowed at least three runs.

Three Area Teams Played on the Final Day of 2021 SD VFW 14U Class A State Tournament

Three games finished up the 2021 SD VFW 14U Class A State Tournament on Sunday. Madison Gold won the Consolation Championship against Dell Rapids 9-5. Both Madison and Dell Rapids lost on Friday and won on Saturday to meet yesterday. Parker Johnson’s three doubles and four RBIs pushed Madison to the win. Carson Wolf pitched six and one-thirds innings, striking out six.

Madison City Commission meeting Monday

The Madison City Commission holds its regular weekly meeting later Monday. Commissioners will set the date of hearing on an ordinance regarding chickens, and will hold hearing and first reading of an ordinance regarding the city’s budget deadline. The commission is also scheduled to discuss the purchase of a Cyber Estate lot from Nielsen Development for a future park, and discuss the Lake County 911 payment of expenses quarterly and transfer contingency funds. Commissioners are also scheduled to adopt a grant policy.

Two Humboldt/Hartford Teams Eliminated in Cornbelt Playoffs

Both Humboldt/Hartford teams from the Cornbelt League were eliminated in the District 4B Tournament on Sunday. The Wood Ducks lost to Lennox and the Gamecocks went down to Colman in the double header. Lennox will play Madison and Colman will take on Salem, and both will be Wednesday. The tournament will continue Tuesday with the winners bracket. Canova takes on Flandreau at 6:00 p.m. and the two Dell Rapids teams play at 8:00 p.m.
