Manhattan man hospitalized after accident south of Junction City

GEARY CO., Kan. (WIBW) - A Manhattan man was rushed to the hospital after rear-ending a pickup truck along Highway 77 south of Junction City. The Geary Co. Sheriff’s Office says that just after 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9, emergency crews were called to Highway 77 and Skiddy West Rd. in Geary Co. with reports of a two-vehicle accident.

County approves interlocal agreement on hospital improvements funding

Geary County Commissioners have approved an interlocal agreement dealing with an upcoming revenue bond issue for the hospital in Junction City. Geary County plans to issue revenue bonds, in part to make repairs that will be needed for the current Geary Community Hospital facility. They are needed for the lease agreement under which Stormont Vail Health will assume oversight of the hospital on Jan. 1.

Jimmie Joe “JJ” Nielsen, rural Allen, Kansas, passed away at his home on Friday, August 5, 2022, at the age of 84. JJ Nielsen was born in Dunlap, Kansas on December 31, 1937, the son of Christian and Roberta Vivian (Bronaugh) Nielsen. He married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Helen McElfresh in El Dorado, Kansas on September 3, 1957. She survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Vicki (David) Jones, Americus, Kansas; brother, Larry Nielsen, Americus, Kansas; grandchildren, Justin (Melissa) Nielsen, Chauncy (Alan) Hucke, and Lindsey (Justin) Nurnberg; great-grandchildren, Abigail Brown, Adrian Brown, Matthew Brown, Mariah Demory, Triston Brown, Trevor Geisler, Harper Hucke, Graham Hucke, Jade Nurnberg, Andrew Tacy, Gunner Nurnberg, Ty Nurnberg.

Bruns and Ora Jean Shelby Bruns Buffinton. Sherry was born and raised in Manhattan, she attended Manhattan schools. Her ninth grade year she attended Seventh Day Adventist Academy in Enterprise, Kansas.

Konza Celebrating National Health Center Week with Food Drive

Konza Prairie Community Health Center has announced that they are celebrating National Health Center Week with a food drive to stock the Konza Cupboard, a free pantry located outside the clinic at 361 Grant Ave in Junction City. The food drive will also benefit patients of the Konza clinic in Manhattan. Konza staff are contributing to this effort with an internal competition to see which department can donate the most items. The previous food drive, in August 2021, brought in enough supplies to fill the Konza Cupboard for three months.

Lawrence Police Arrest Man Wanted in Ohio Quadruple Murder. LAWRENCE, Kan. (KPR) - Lawrence police have arrested a man wanted in connection with a quadruple murder in Ohio. 39-year-old Stephen Marlow was taken into custody Saturday night after a nation-wide search. The shootings took place Friday at multiple crime scenes in a suburban neighborhood north of Dayton, Ohio. Butler Township police have identified the victims as 82-year-old Clyde Knox, 78-year-old Eva Knox, 41-year-old Sarah Anderson, and 15-year-old Kayla Anderson. In a press release, Lawrence police said on-duty police had reason to believe Marlow was in Lawrence and initiated a city-wide search. He was taken into custody without incident after police identified his vehicle at 23rd Street and Ousdahl. Police said they had not yet determined a motive for the shootings. Butler Township Police Chief John Porter said Marlow will be extradited to Ohio to face charges.
