May is Mental Health Month, and the Cahaba Center for Mental Health is doing its part to let the community know that they are ready to help. “We’re all more aware of mental health issues because of COVID, because we have all been isolated,” Center Executive Director Carrie Bearden said. “Luckily, that seems to be turning the corner. Before the coronavirus pandemic took hold, Alabama was dealing with an increase in another kind of infections: Sexually transmitted diseases. No Alabama county dealt with a larger STD rate than Wilcox County, a small, rural county in Alabama’s Black Belt region. SABRA Sanctuary raises $15K at golf tournament

SABRA Sanctuary’s inaugural charity golf tournament was held on March 30 at Valley Grande Golf Course in Selma with 21 teams. SABRA Sanctuary, which serves Wilcox County, has not been able to fund raise for over two years, mainly because of the pandemic. Executive Director Merrill South said “I am so humbled. We had over 80 hole sponsors and we exceeded our goal of golfers signed up, too. No one told us no. We raised $15,000 that will go to helping victims of domestic abuse.”

Man convicted in 2016 domestic shooting at pool hall that killed innocent bystander

A 58-year-old Pine Hill man has been convicted in a 2016 shooting at a Wilcox County pool hall that left an innocent bystander dead, and the shooter’s girlfriend wounded. A jury on Thursday deliberated for 40 minutes before convicting James Leon Smith of manslaughter, attempted murder and certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm, said District Attorney Michael Jackson. The verdict followed a week-long trial.
