Purging the pain: Adherents tout the benefits of trauma informed yoga

The cacophony of Monroe Street is dimmed upon crossing the threshold of glass separating the outside world from the internal safety of a room where Karen Hover, a Trauma informed Yoga instructor, holds a class for those with a history of addiction. The silence itself is sobering in a room where students sit with mats on the floor, and the lights taper off as students are invited to turn inward. “You just shut off everything around you,” said Ashley Amaya, 33, of West Toledo, who started going to Yoga classes led by Ms Hover about six months ago as part of a rehabilitation program. Once a week students like Ms. Amaya are welcomed to sit with themselves, with their bodies and to literally catch their breathe.

And that’s how it stands out from the crowd of sports bars in the area. This venue opened earlier this year in a former Jed’s in the Harbor Town Place development in Perrysburg.
