Public Comments Shine Light on CWEDA

Monday night's virtual Camas City Council meeting included a pronouncement of the creation of an ask The Mayor Anything (AMA) forum, the unanimous approval of more than $1 million of new projects and consultants fees, and another financial presentation that continues to assume Camas will somehow avoid all negative financial impact from COVID.

State Auditor: CWEDA "resisted audits for years, lost public funds & lacked even basic financials"

Loss of funds at economic development association underscores need for audits. The Camas-Washougal Economic Development Association resisted audits for years, lost public funds and lacked even basic financial documentation since its inception, the Office of the Washington State Auditor found in two reports issued today. “Public funds need oversight and...

The Same Old Song and Dance

Who is John Nohr? Camas city officials and staff did not seem too concerned with the answer to that question during the Monday, April 6th City Council meeting. They didn’t ask for John’s address, as they do with nearly every other citizen prior to comment. They didn’t seem curious at all - almost like they knew John well enough to overlook it. Maybe they didn’t need to worry that John might say something critical that evening, because maybe John is one of the “good guys” in their eyes. After all, though never introduced as such by council or by John himself, John Nohr is a Clark County Fire Chief.

DON'T MISS THIS: Know When to Quit(claim)

Those of you that have seen the extremely popular “Tiger King” documentary series on Netflix may remember the infamous star, Joe Exotic, had some legal complications around something called a “quitclaim deed” during the series (see “What is a quitclaim deed” below if you aren’t familiar). Joe Exotic used this legal device to put assets in his mother’s name to avoid potential seizure and bragged about the effectiveness of it during one episode. As this series has seemingly swept our nation during quarantine, it’s reasonable to assume that City Officials and their consultants of choice were among the viewing public. They may have been inspired by the legal actions of this beautiful animal with a long, flowing mane late one night after some impromptu binge-watching.

Camas' Musical Chairs

The majority of Camas' Board, Commission and Committee meetings are now cancelled through the end of May with this recent public notice from a secondary web page on the city of Camas website. While city council meetings get the bulk of the attention in Camas, a lot goes on in these citizen boards and commission meetings made up of volunteers. In these meetings, citizens make recommendations to council, along with staff liaisons. While city council meetings persist to discuss "essential work" like roundabouts and real estate, what essential work is not occurring in these important meetings that aren't allowed to proceed remotely as city council meetings are?

DON'T MISS THIS: Camas Officially Cancels May Meetings for Boards, Commissions and Committees

The existing cancellation announcement from the city for these board, commission and committee meetings was to last through April 2020. Camas has now announced that the following meetings in May will also be cancelled in response to COVID-19. A note was made next to the May 18th Council Workshop meeting noting that the 7pm Regular Meeting status is pending. This meeting will likely proceed remotely.

A Sticky Situation: The February North Shore "Visioning Workshop"

During the North Shore "Visioning Workshop" on February 4th, 2020, an unknown presenter without a title or a company disclosed, introduced himself only as "Steve". Steve took the microphone from Sarah Fox, longtime Camas Planner and newly elected Vancouver City Council member, who didn’t introduce him. For the rest of that night, neither Steve nor Sarah nor any of the other city officials in attendance, including the mayor, would provide qualification as to who Steve was. Nobody disclosed what function Steve performed, who Steve worked for and why Steve was someone to be taken seriously at all by citizens. There are a number of “Steves” involved in Camas’ interaction with its people in the last several years - a vague insulation to at the same time calm frustrations and give citizens a sense of being heard. Citizens who’ve had direct interactions with the “Steves” of Camas report hearing things akin to, “I’m not the guy you’re mad at, but you make a great point, and I can definitely let them know your concerns” before never hearing anything again. A sort of energy vampirism that drains a citizen of their rightful upset at poor representation, while also feeding Steve what he needs to get his consultant’s paycheck from Camas taxpayers.

DID YOU KNOW? The city of Camas is actively searching for a City Administrator? (Deadline: May 3rd)

"WATCH Camas has received an anonymous tip from someone involved in the hiring process that Waldron has performed HR work for Camas in the past and was brought into this current hiring process by ACTING City Administrator Jennifer Gorsuch. Jennifer may naturally herself be a candidate for the position as current acting city admin - Do you feel that a person recruiting the person that would potentially be recommending them for a job has a strong conflict of interest?"

Correcting the Record: Camas or Vancouver?

“...Why does the city demand citizen names and addresses during comment, on the public record, if it doesn't intend to enforce these meetings as a forum for neighbors that pay for the privilege? What purpose does it serve outside of intimidating the more timid neighbors among us from speaking their minds on controversial issues?...”

DON'T MISS THIS! Councilor Ellen Burton seemed to realize she was up for re-election this week.

During the April 20th council meeting, while Camas silently released the news about a former mayor in legal trouble at 7:30 at night, Ellen Burton was the only person with a list of questions and comments in this, or any council meeting week in recent memory - None of those questions were about Paul Dennis suspected criminal activity or CWEDA of course, that story wasn't mentioned once by anyone during this meeting.

Correcting the Record: Camas or Vancouver?

In the city's first remote public council meeting, the first "citizen" selected was neither a Camas citizen or a chance selection it seems - And the city of Camas has now officially falsified the public record covering up that important issue. As that meeting started on the evening of April...

TELL YOUR FRIENDS: Camas to hold its second remote City Council (Zoom) meeting on 4/20 @ 7pm

The city of Camas released information citizens need through two separate channels again this Thursday evening and again, past regular business hours. The notice went out partially through Twitter, partially through Facebook and partially through the city's meeting portal - the announcement was not present on the city's homepage at all as of the publishing of this story. A standard "best practice" approach for an organization that wanted all readers to have the full story would be to post the main story in a centralized location without any restrictions to access (e.g. the city's public home page) and then link back to that core information in all social media channels like Twitter, Facebook and NextDoor.

Without clicking, what do you think is different between these two websites? What do you think is the same?. These are two separate websites, with two separate sets of billable hours and two separate monthly costs to host and maintain. They each tell half of the same story though - why?
