Brenham ISD is moving forward with plans for an after-school program hosted in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Washington County. On Monday, the Brenham School Board approved a memorandum of understanding with the Boys and Girls Club to provide the program, which will be hosted on-site at each elementary school. Superintendent Dr. Tylor Chaplin said this will allow elementary students to stay at school to receive after-school care, while also allowing the club to focus more on middle school, junior high and high school students at its facility on East Tom Green Street.

Late Saturday evening, just after 10:00 p.m., Brenham authorities responded to an accident in the 500 block of Key St. near West Second. According to Brenham Police, 27-year-old Alfredo Fonseca Prieto of Brenham was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. Prieto was transported to the Washington County Jail.

A longtime local practitioner and Washington County’s medical director is the recipient of a statewide lifetime achievement award. At today’s (Tuesday) Washington County Commissioners meeting, Dr. Robert Stark was presented the 2021 President’s Award by the Texas Ambulance Association (TAA). Each year, the organization nominates an individual for the award, recognizing the body of work he or she has done for their community.

Washington County Commissioners are proceeding with outsourcing medical services at the Washington County Jail to a private company. At today’s (Tuesday) meeting, the court agreed to move forward with negotiating a contract with CorrHealth out of Dallas for services at the jail. A contract with the agency will be brought back before commissioners at a future meeting.

This year’s Blue Bell Fun Run raised a significant amount of funding for Brenham High School athletics. At Monday’s Brenham School Board meeting, trustees accepted a donation of $28,000 from Run for the Youth of Washington County, the organization that puts on the Fun Run. This year’s event was held in April and featured both in-person and virtual elements.
