Indianola YMCA Hosting 9/11 Remembrance Day

The Indianola YMCA is hosting their annual 9/11 Remembrance Day in September, in partnership with the Indianola Fire Department and other Warren County Firefighters. The event will include a presentation of the colors, the singing of the national anthem, and a moment of silence, and various activities throughout the day. The event is a way to honor first responders and their sacrifices made not only on 9/11 but every day. The 9/11 Remembrance Day is on September 11th from 12-2pm at the Indianola YMCA.

Brief Severe Thunderstorm Warning Impacts Western Warren County

A line of storms produced a brief warning as it moved through western Warren County Sunday evening. The KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team was briefly on the air for a severe thunderstorm warning issued at 8:45pm for the northwestern half of Warren County. A rain system with unpredictable, slow-moving storms impacted nearly the entire state, but only rose to severe levels briefly as it traveled east through Madison County, and trending further south than National Weather Service predictions towards Martensdale and St. Mary in Warren County. The KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team is on the air for any severe thunderstorm or tornado warning for any portion of Marion and Warren Counties, with backup generators ensuring the coverage stays on if the power goes out.

Drought Spreads Locally, Little Relief in Sight

A dry month of July and recent stretches of heat have expanded drought locally across south central Iowa. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor report shows moderate conditions now exist in Marion and Warren Counties, as well as several neighboring communities. The summary issued by the organization notes that most of southern and western Iowa have missed out on soaking rains for several weeks dating back to the late spring. This is the third consecutive summer that drought conditions have been documented locally by the U.S. Drought Monitor Report (most of June 2021 and late August/early September of 2020).

Warren County Economic Development Grant Contest Underway

The Warren County Economic Development annual 2022 Small Business Grant Contest is underway, offering prizes for both existing and start-up businesses in the county. Executive Director Rachel Gocken tells KNIA News applications for the contest are open now, and is geared towards businesses that will make a capital improvement to their operations with the grant funds. Gocken also said there will be grant funds for the top three businesses in each category, with the grand prize being $6,000 for existing businesses, and a $5,000 prize for start-up businesses. Warren County Economic Development held their annual Business Breakfast Wednesday at the National Balloon Classic balloon fields, inviting business owners and employees, elected officials, and community leaders for updates around Warren County.
