Wapello County man gets probation in child pornography case

OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - A Wapello County man gets probation following his arrest on six counts of sexual exploitation of a child. Police say through their investigation they found Jacob Mason had possessed fifteen child pornography files, created a collage of child pornographic images, and had photos of children he knew through family and friends who were clothed and under the age of 15.

Settlement reached in police, sheriff lawsuit

OTTUMWA — A federal lawsuit against local law enforcement entities and officers has resulted in a $10,000 settlement. In June, Robert VanDyke filed a federal lawsuit against law enforcement with the Wapello County Sheriff's Office and Ottumwa Police Department. In his initial lawsuit filing, VanDyke levied a dozen counts of various allegations, ranging from violations of constitutional and civil rights, as well as claims of false arrest and assault.

Jacob Mason, 38, of Ottumwa, was sentenced Thursday to two years of probation, with 12 years of suspended prison that could be imposed later if probation is violated.

Ottumwa Man Accused Of Multiple Offenses In 6 Week Period

An Ottumwa man is facing several charges related to an alleged 6 week crime spree. According to court documents, on November 23, 2021, 35 year old Omar Rafael Solorio-Valdez Jr. was arrested for a public offense. The report stated that Solorio-Valdez was searched and found to be in possession of burglary tools, which consisted of multiple keys and screw drivers. The report states that Solorio-Valdez admitted to using the tools to gain access to locked vehicles and start them. A related incident report states that Solorio-Valdez was linked to a series of indictable offenses over a 6 week period.

Firefighters respond to rural Wapello County hay bale fire

OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - Firefighters around the county responded to a hay bale fire in rural Wapello County Tuesday. Crews from the Wapello County Rural Volunteer Fire Department and Blakesburg fire department arrived to see dozens of hay bales up in smoke. Firefighters called for more water to stop the fire’s spread, with construction vehicles moving away charred hay bales.

Blakesburg Woman Accused Of Sex Offender Registry Violation

A Blakesburg woman is facing charges after allegedly failing to comply with sex offender registry requirements. According to court records, on October 26, 2021, a deputy with the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office conducted a sex offender compliance check on 43 year old Catherine Provancha of Blakesburg. According to the incident report, the deputy first went to the first address Provancha gave as hers, a residence on Highway 34. After trying two addresses on Highway 34, the deputy was informed by Provancha that she was currently at a residence across the street from the listed address. Upon meeting with her, the deputy explained the registry requirements to her. Provancha allegedly stated that she stays at multiple addresses. After the visit, she was deemed in violation and an arrest warrant was issued.

Chicago Man Facing Charges After Attempted Traffic Stop

A Chicago man is facing several charges stemming from a traffic stop that he allegedly fled from. According to court documents, at around 12:37 AM on November 16 near Venture Drive, an officer with the Ottumwa Police Department attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a 2009 Dodge Journey driven by 31 year old Alprentice Samuels of Chicago, who had allegedly failed to stop at the sign. Upon initiating the stop, police reports indicate that Samuels sped off, reaching speeds of 90 MPH in a 45 MPH zone. The report states that Samuels was involved in a single vehicle accident which ended the pursuit.
