Trial scheduled for man charged with choking woman

JANESVILLE—A jury trial is set to begin Nov. 29 for a former Janesville man accused of strangling a woman who reportedly teased him about being a Minnesota Vikings fan. Mark E. Mueller, 57, who currently lives in Macomb, Illinois, faces three counts of domestic abuse due to the Dec. 24, 2019 incident when he became involved in an altercation with the woman.

Suspect arrested after long standoff at Algonquin motel

A standoff at an Algonquin motel lasted about nine hours Wednesday before a SWAT team deployed chemical irritants into a wanted man's room and arrested him. Police said officers were called to the Holiday Inn Express, which is across Golden Eagle Drive from Jacobs High School, at 10:53 a.m. for a report of suspicious activity. Deputy Chief Ryan Markham said that after officers were told a man tried to change the name under which he was registered, they discovered he was wanted on an arrest warrant on a charge of sexual exploitation of a child.

U.S. 14 completely closed near Janesville following crash

JANESVILLE, Wis. (WMTV) - The Wisconsin State Patrol is warning drivers near Janesville that all lanes of U.S. 14, just east of the city, are closed because of a crash. The wreck reportedly happened around 6:30 a.m. and it has forced the shut down of the highway between Emerald Grove Rd. and S. Cemetery Road.

Janesville man sentenced to probation over child porn charges

JANESVILLE—A Janesville man convicted of possessing child pornography was sentenced to probation during a hearing in Rock County Circuit Court on Tuesday. Christian T. Cheatle, 20, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of child pornography before Rock County Branch 6 Judge John Wood. Cheatle received a withheld sentence of six years probation, but he will be required to register as a sex offender for the next 15 years.

Janesville seeks to buy 129 acres of land

JANESVILLE—The city of Janesville is laying the groundwork for a potential $4.5 million industrial land expansion along its south-side business corridor. If a deal comes to full fruition, the city would secure 129 acres of farmland off County G that could be developed for future industrial use. The site is just south of the Dollar General distribution facility.
